Business Overview

Rakuten focuses on expanding Rakuten Symphony business that provides to global customers our fully virtualized cloud native mobile network established in Japan, in addition to operating mobile network business, which is the key strategic area of the Rakuten group.

Department Overview

We are hiring new members that supports intellectual property activities in our mobile network operator business and Rakuten Symphony business. The Rakuten Mobile business is actively promoting global business and development activities in Japan and overseas. We have many intellectual property teams outside of Japan and are developing an intellectual property organization consisting of multi-national members.

Intellectual Property members are rapidly expanding along with the business growth, communicating with company executives, who have high intellectual property awareness. We are also monthly presenting IP update at Asakai, which is a company-wide conference that all employees join. That disrupt the tradition and establish new and original intellectual property activities at the battlefront of mobile communications.

We are now in the midst of establishing intellectual property activities at Rakuten’s mobile business and Rakuten Symphony business from scratch. It would be once-in-a-lifetime experience, even if you are in the intellectual property field for long. Most members were hired mid-career. Some newly grads. Mid-career members are from intellectual property departments of private companies, patent law firms, intellectual property research companies, etc.

It is necessary to further strengthen our intellectual property planning functions, and since we have vacancies due to two members leaving for overseas study (both for positive reasons), we would like to recruit talented personnel from outside the company.

Position Details

We are currently recruiting for the following positions.
You will be responsible for one or more of the tasks listed below.

IP Management Systems/Process Optimization - System Specialist
- Operation and maintenance of management systems.
- Business process improvement based on management systems.
- Business process improvement utilizing RPA/AI.

Information Analysis - patent analyst
- IP landscape analysis.
- Intellectual property strategy planning.
- Preparation of executive reports.

OSS (Open Source Software) - OSS Specialist
- Establishment of OSS governance frameworks.
- OSS review in product launch processes.
- Contract review.
- In-house OSS education and awareness activities.

Governance Specialist
- Development of intellectual property management regulations.
- Project management within the department.
- Management of standard essential patents.
- Construction and improvement of departmental business processes.
- Internal and external PR activities related to intellectual property.

Intellectual Property Coordinator
- Application management tasks.
- Construction of application/management workflows.
- Management of domestic and international patent offices.

General Management/Manager Candidate
- Cross-sectional management of several of the above areas.

Work Environment

Intellectual Property Strategy Section, Strategic Business Compliance Support Department., Rakuten Group, Inc.
The entire department consists of just under 30 members, with most in their 20s and 30s, including some who are active as L5 managers. Most managers at L4 and above are in their 40s to 50s.

Mandatory Qualifications:

- Over 3 years of experience in foreign patent and trademark management of intellectual property in a patent firm or Over 3 years of experience in IP work in a company.
- Language skill: TOEIC score 800 (or higher) or Business-level English (A speaking and listening comprehension is needed.).
- Business-level Japanese.

Desired Qualifications:

- Skills in discussion, material preparation, and presentation in English.
- Experience in managing projects that require collaboration with other departments or overseas team members.
- Experience in leading establishment of business flows and systems.
- Experience living in an English-speaking country. Results of TOEFL, IELTS, EIKEN, etc. are preferred.
- Intellectual Property Management Skills Certification Level 2 or higher.
