The Accounting Manager – Onboarding will lead the client onboarding function for a growing business management services organization, ensuring every new client transitions smoothly from signing to ongoing accounting support. This senior role combines hands-on accounting expertise, team leadership, and client relationship management across for-profit and nonprofit organizations. You will oversee a team of onboarding accountants and manage multiple client engagements simultaneously, taking ownership of catch-up bookkeeping, account cleanup, reconciliations, and financial record accuracy. You will also continuously improve onboarding workflows, helping the team deliver a consistent, efficient, and high-quality client experience. This is a remote-first opportunity.

Accountabilities:

  • Lead and manage a team of onboarding accountants, assigning responsibilities, reviewing deliverables, establishing quality standards, and supporting professional development.

  • Serve as the primary delivery lead for new clients after contract signing, setting expectations and building strong client relationships from the beginning.

  • Oversee all historical accounting and catch-up work, including bookkeeping, account cleanup, reconciliations, and bringing financial records up to date.

  • Set up new client accounts within internal systems and guide clients through connecting to the required tools and processes.

  • Manage the client transition process, helping clients move from previous providers and practices while clearly communicating new workflows and expectations.

  • Ensure accurate, timely handoffs to ongoing Client Accounting Services (CAS) accountants, with complete books and thorough documentation.

  • Coordinate with tax teams for clients receiving tax services, gathering initial information, sharing onboarding findings, and facilitating introductions.

  • Monitor a high volume of client onboardings across different stages, identify bottlenecks, and keep delivery timelines on track.

  • Develop and refine onboarding procedures, checklists, and workflows to improve consistency, efficiency, and the overall client experience.

  • Ensure clients feel informed and confident throughout their first 30 days, and that their accounting records are ready for ongoing management without additional cleanup.

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of accounting experience, including significant experience at Senior Accountant level or above.

  • Strong hands-on expertise in catch-up bookkeeping and accounting cleanup, including resolving incomplete, disorganized, or inaccurate financial records.

  • Experience with both for-profit and nonprofit accounting.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of concurrent assignments and multiple client engagements at different stages.

  • Previous experience leading, training, supervising, or reviewing the work of other accounting professionals.

  • Excellent client communication skills, including the ability to explain complex accounting issues in clear, accessible language and maintain client confidence during challenging transitions.

  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and/or Xero.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to manage deadlines and competing priorities.

  • Preferred qualifications:

    • CPA certification or progress toward obtaining a CPA.

    • Experience in client accounting services, outsourced accounting, or another client-facing professional services environment.

    • Familiarity with insurance agencies, youth sports organizations, or nonprofit organizations.

    • Experience developing or improving onboarding, implementation, or client transition processes.

    • Working knowledge of business taxation, with the ability to identify accounting cleanup issues that may require tax team attention.

  • Strong leadership, coaching, and process improvement capabilities, with a focus on team productivity and consistent service quality.

Benefits:

  • Work arrangement: Remote-first organization, supporting work-life balance.

  • Professional development: Opportunity to lead and develop an accounting team while improving client onboarding operations.
